Hip Care That Gets You Moving Again

The hip joint is designed for stability and endurance, but when damaged by injury or arthritis, the pain can be debilitating. Dr. Ralph Rizk is an expert in treating a full spectrum of hip conditions, focusing on getting you back on your feet with restored mobility and minimal pain.

Whether you require advanced reconstruction or a personalized non-surgical plan, Dr. Rizk utilizes the latest techniques to ensure the best possible outcome.

Common Symptoms of Hip Problems

Some of the most common symptoms patients often experience include:

  • Groin or thigh pain

  • Pain that radiates down to the buttock or knee

  • Stiffness, especially in the morning or after sitting

  • Trouble putting on shoes or socks

  • Clicking, catching, or locking

  • Difficulty walking long distances or climbing stairs

  • Pain at night or while lying on the affected side

If these symptoms persist, worsen, or limit daily activity, it may be time to see a hip specialist.

Comprehensive Solutions for Hip Pain Relief

The hip is a ball-and-socket joint where the femoral head (the ball) meets the acetabulum (the socket). When the articular cartilage—the smooth, slippery substance that cushions the bones—wears away due to age, injury, or disease, the resulting bone-on-bone friction causes the debilitating pain and stiffness characteristic of hip arthritis.

Dr. Rizk diagnoses and treats all major hip issues, including degenerative, inflammatory, and traumatic conditions:

  • Total Hip Replacement: Definitive surgical treatment for end-stage arthritis using modern techniques, including the Direct Anterior Approach and Robotic-Assisted Surgery.

  • Hip Arthritis: Comprehensive non-surgical management and pain relief strategies for all forms of osteoarthritis and post-traumatic arthritis.

  • Hip Impingement (FAI): Advanced arthroscopic treatment for Femoroacetabular Impingement and related labral tears to preserve the native joint, particularly in younger, active patients.

  • Hip Fractures: Expert assessment and treatment for urgent hip trauma, including fractures of the femoral neck and complex pelvic breaks.

Management of Inflammatory and Autoimmune Conditions

While structural issues are the primary focus, Dr. Rizk's practice provides specialized care for hip joint deterioration caused by systemic diseases:

  • Ankylosing Spondylitis: This chronic inflammation of the spine can cause severe joint damage in the hips, leading to stiffness and pain that requires advanced surgical solutions.

  • Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (Lupus): Lupus can cause inflammation and severe deterioration in the hip joint, often necessitating complex reconstructive surgery to restore function.

  • Psoriatic Arthritis: This condition, related to psoriasis, causes joint pain and stiffness in any joint, including the hip. Dr. Rizk manages the resulting joint damage, aiming to eliminate pain and restore mobility.

  • Osteoarthritis: A degenerative joint condition in which the protective cartilage slowly wears away, most commonly affecting adults over 50. As the cartilage breaks down, bones can rub together and form bone spurs, causing pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility over time.

Non-Surgical to Surgical Treatment Options

From non-surgical hip care to joint replacement, we focus on easing pain, restoring movement, and helping you get back to the activities you enjoy.

  1. Diagnosis: A thorough physical exam and advanced imaging (X-rays, MRI) to accurately diagnose the source and severity of your hip pain.

  2. Conservative Care: Exploring non-surgical options like Physical Therapy, Lifestyle Modification, Medications, and cortisone injections.

  3. Surgical Reconstruction: Performing advanced surgical solutions, ranging from arthroscopic labral repair to robotic total hip replacement, when conservative care is no longer effective.

Your Hip Care Questions, Answered.

  • While many insurance plans require a referral, we recommend you call our Jacksonville or Cove Springs office. Our team will verify your insurance and guide you through the process to ensure a seamless first appointment.

  • Dr. Rizk is committed to a conservative-first approach. He offers a wide range of non-surgical treatments, including physical therapy prescriptions and various injection therapies, and only recommends hip replacement or surgery when those methods have been exhausted.

  • X-Rays - These imaging tests create detailed pictures of dense structures, like bones. X-rays of an arthritic hip may show a narrowing of the joint space, changes in the bone, and the formation of bone spurs (osteophytes). Occasionally, a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan, a computed tomography (CT) scan, or a bone scan may be needed to better determine the condition of the bone and soft tissues of your hip.
